It is important to think “What is the big goal that I am trying to do?”

– Jouko Väänänen

How often should you apply for grants? How much time are you supposed to use on grant applications? What is the single most important thing you need to have in order to get a tenure? Can you ask your co-author for a reference letter? What’s more important quality or quantity: Many of papers vs. Good papers? How do scientific projects turn from small curiosities to huge and impactful? What is the importance of giving talks?  These topics comprise around 40% of my interview with Jouko Väänänen, the Vice-Rector of the University of Helsinki. Jouko has been my mentor since 2006 when I first walked into the mathematics and statistics department of University of Helsinki where I later obtained my PhD in mathematical logic – the speciality of Jouko Väänänen.
